A literal product of the underground, iona worked in a subterranean bank vault counting money before joining the staff of London’s dearly departed Dance Tunnel to do much the same. Her debut gig as DJ Leisurewear down in the DT basement - a last minute warm up for a friend - led some months later to a pivotal final performance in the Tunnel under her own name. With a pocket full of acid house iona threw down at the club’s 2016 closing party, and with neither the sweat, parties nor a love of comfy trousers stopping since then, she’s been turning up and playing tunes every year as a resident at Field Maneuvers, and from the beaches of Albania to Panorama Bar, with the same minimum of fanfare. iona’s sound keeps the dancefloor firmly in the crosshairs with sonic manifestations in mixes on NTS, Crack, DJ Mag and Daisychain alongside regular shows on Rinse. The biggest bangers might be the slowest and deepest. Peak-time breakbeat techno dissolves in and out of broken percussive rhythms with trippy fluidity and intensity. It’s the logic of dreams, making perfect sense when you’re floating inside of it, dissolving into something indescribable if you try to break it down. Past releases on Don’t Be Afraid and Natural Frequency records as one half of Midnight Snacc foreshadow forthcoming solo excursions.
