Plötzlich taucht eine Stimme auf, so eindringlich und unmittelbar, dass die Zeit kurz innehält, bis man begreift, was da passiert: EV, das musikalische Alias des Songwriters und Produzenten Evan Scase, ist diese Stimme. Aufgewachsen zwischen Bass und Plattenbaubeton, erzählt er von den Höhen und Untiefen des britischen Alltags, mit einer Sprache so wuchtig und direkt, dass man das Gefühl hat, mit ihm zusammen um den Block zu ziehen. Getragen von euphorischem 90er-Rave, UK-Rap und bassintensiver Clubmusik reihen sich seine fesselnden sozialen Erzählungen und melodischen Rap-Texte nahtlos in die Tradition von Artists wie Plan B, The Streets, Fontaines D.C., Example und Bicep ein.

Das Ganze kommt nicht von ungefähr. Breakbeat, Drum ’n’ Bass und Jungle hörte er im Auto seines Vaters, sein älterer Bruder machte ihn mit dem Rap von The Streets, Skepta und Professor Green bekannt. Auf dem Weg ins Studio ging er einen Umweg. Er lebte etwas außerhalb von Ipswich und arbeitete als Lkw-Mechaniker, während er in seinen „verrückten 60-Stunden-Wochen“ parallel Tracks produzierte. Diese Prägung hört man: seine Musik ist rohe Subkultur und die Texte erzählen vom Leben nach Feierabend, triumphal durchgefeierten Wochenenden und einer nüchternen Realität voller Ungleichheit und Ungerechtigkeit.

Every now and then a voice comes along that makes you stop and listen. EV, the moniker of artist-songwriter-producer Evan Scase, is just that: the everyday poet turning heads with his relatable yet unapologetically in-your-face lyrics that imprint on your mind, and infectious tunes to match.Inspired by 90s rave, UK rap, alternative and electronic dance, EV takes the listener through the highs and lows of British life, his compelling social narration and melodic rap straddling such artists as Plan B, The Streets, Fontaines D.C., Example and Bicep.

EV gained his love of rave and electronic dance music from the 90s breakbeat, drum ‘n’ bass and jungle his father played on car journeys, while his older brother introduced him to the rap of The Streets, Kano, Skepta and Professor Green. EV never looked back. Living just outside Ipswich, he was working as a lorry mechanic throughout his early 20s; and all the while he did his “crazy 60-hour” weeks, he was producing tracks and honing his broad electronic-dance palette.

EV’s 2024 EP ‘DJs, Dealers and Ravers’ was a trip through UK weekend culture; from its exuberant opening track ‘Friday Nights', to the aptly titled ‘Come Down’ heralding the arrival back to work on a Monday morning, garnering enthusiastic support from tastemakers including DJ Interplanetary Criminal, Abbie McCarthy, BBC Radio 1’s Jack Saunders and BBC Introducing. ‘Friday Nights’ landed BBC Introducing Radio 1 Track of the Week, while 'English Lad' with Ben Gerrans quickly found a community through TikTok and hit Spotify's Viral 50 across Europe.

But a lot has changed since that EP. For a start, EV is nearing the end of his 20s, and he has also become a father to a little girl. His first Polydor-released EP ‘Sunset Behind the Tower Blocks’ could be described as its older, more mature brother. On a quest to do more than sing about nights out, EV put social issues and mental health under the spotlight as he channelled the real, lived experiences of British working-life culture.
