Detroit Love is Carl Craig's party series: launched in 2014, built on the conviction that Detroit's contribution to electronic music is too specific to be reduced to a genre tag. For this Blitz edition, it brings together three of the Motor City's ambassadors and their perspectives of the city's influential dance music sound.
Craig founded Planet E Communications in 1991 as protégé of Derrick May, and has spent the decades since building one of the most consistently distinguished labels in the music, one that released, among others, Moodymann's 1997 debut album. Kenny Dixon Jr. aka Moodymann entered Detroit's scene in the early 1990s, moving from hip-hop production toward a sound fusing house, soul and techno into something that could only have come from that city and that community. After playing bass in bands like Parliament, „Mad" Mike Banks co-founded the highly influential Underground Resistance collective and label with Jeff Mills in 1989, tying Detroit techno's aesthetics directly to the economic and political realities of Reagan-era inner-city America. Their trailblazing political ethos, rejecting the commercialization of Techno and hedonism in dance music alongside targeting socio-economic racial hierarchies has become a blueprint of political dance music.
