After a brief phase of spinning Trance and Goa music in 1995 Jan Ickx started as a Hip Hop DJ under the name of deckstar89, which led him into co-founding AFDC (Alles für die Cutz), which became a well known DJ/turntablist crew and influential Mixtape label for the german Hip Hop scene. Always interested in the classic funk and soul samples used in rap music, Jan released his first raregroove mixtape still under the AFDC label. This marked a shift towards exclusively digging and playing Funk & Soul 45’s. Teaming up with DJ Ronnie Evangelista as ›The Funkexpress‹ in the early 2000‘s, Jan became a resident DJs in Wuppertal’s legendary ›45 rpm‹ Club and Essen’s ›Capri Bar‹ as well as playing other venues all over Germany, Belgium and the Netherlands for more than 10 years. After moving to Berlin in 2012 Jan discovered his love for electronic music, got rid of the ›Jan‹ and became part of CHOOSE collective as ›ICKX‹, starting to play from progressive house to melodic to peaktime techno as well as producing his own music. This is how the story goes.
