Cynthia Spiering

Getting in touch with techno at the young age of 18, Cynthia Spiering has been making quite a name for her self these past years. It all started when she first began working in the vibrant Rotterdam techno scene. Always wondering how the many DJ’s managed to play such inspiring sets, she started to practice with technical aspects of DJ’ing. She managed to get many hours of practice in, which resulted in having her first gig in 2016. Her sound can be described as euphoric and hopeful, but with hard non-compromising kick drums. Old classic rave and acid sounds can be heard through her many energetic sets, as she pulls some of her inspiration during those high tide days. Cynthia manages to combine the strengths of the old days with the present. This incorporation of sounds can be heard in her productions and sets. Cynthia Spiering, a fast rising DJ/Producer, with shows for some of the biggest organizations in the Dutch scene. Her profile is getting more and more traction with each weekend. An artist to keep an eye on.

Michel de Hey

hts in this ever changing scenery is surely Michel de Hey, renowned for his 30 ye.ars of experience in the field, a worldwide respected DJ, producer, label boss and promoter. With his story still developing, things are getting more interesting by the day. This is it Of course, the early days of Michel de Hey's career speak volumes. Coming up in a still infant dance music scene, back in the late 80s, he quickly becomes one of Holland's most upfront DJs. Known for his fluent techno style (often referred to as tech-house because of its clubby, uplifting qualities, at other times presenting a more gritty sound honoring his heroes from Detroit), Michel de Hey tends to wow audiences with his performances, always steady in delivering surprising new records and able to effortlessly switch between large rave gigs, mainstage festival and underground club environments. In short, he turns into an omnipresent artist; flag bearer of the Rotterdam techno scene, playing every club and festival in the country, while also being one of the first Dutch DJs to explore the rest of the world, playing high profile gigs from Berlin and Ibiza to Japan and the US. Here's an artist able to get things going at Circoloco the one day, followed by festival Mysteryland the next. Or taking on your local club and world renowned techno rave Time Warp in the same weekend; Michel de Hey is a specialist to the masses, as well as a tastemaker to the specialists. There's more.. This is, as they say, the story in a nutshell. Michel de Hey's leading role in Dutch techno and house music is equally due to his weekly radio show, inspiring young DJs till this day, and his own productions, released on his own HEY! Records, EC Records, Noir Music, Bedrock and Rejected (the acclaimed December 2015 release 'You Feel Alive', drenched in sweet, bouncy house sounds). Meanwhile, the HEY! mark is taken to the floor. There's sold out events in Holland's most well-known clubs like Toffler, Studio 80, AIR, Melkweg and Winkel van Sinkel, as well as the hosting of areas at festivals/events like Boothstock, R'dam Outdoor, Outdoor Stereo and Thuishaven. The recurring HEY! clubnight at beach venue De Karavaan is one of the recent highlights, a series of mindblowing parties attracting crowds from everywhere, still going strong as we speak. For sure, Michel de Hey is expanding his grounds. Inviting artists to his clubnights that underline the sound he envisions (ranging from Ricardo Villalobos to Paul Kalkbrenner, from Danny Daze to Karotte), working endlessly on new music, giving upcoming artists a platform of their own with his Kweekvijver project, and never forgetting the club grounds he emerged from - this is someone on the move. And yes, this story has an open ending. With Michel de Hey's clubnights at an alltime high, his productions getting better by the day and new crowds continuously discovering his charismatic and striking DJ performances, there's no saying in what lies next for this Dutch notoriety. Whatever it is, it will showcase electronic music in its most current shape, fresh and invigorating, with Michel de Hey as its most trustworthy guide.

Above all, his message conveys courage, strength, and hope. Last summer he performed for large crowds at festivals such as Best Kept Secret, Down The Rabbit Hole, DGTL, and many more.

Prunk

DJ/producer Prunk is working at his own pace, but this doesn’t mean he’s taking things slow. His label PIV, which he started in 2015, has been steadily releasing EP’s, like his own production ‘Sexy Brasil’ for instance. The EP was released on the imprint in the spring of 2016. Next to being head honcho of the label and producing records, Prunk has been playing gigs around the world, with Brazil (D.EDGE, São Paulo) and Bali (Jenja) as two of his main features. Prunk, who’s been dj-ing for over 10 years, has found himself the perfect way to remain relevant and relaxed and that’s by doing all he’s doing his own way, together with people he likes working with. This relaxed attitude towards his dj-ing, plus his infectious vibe in the booth got him resident for Straf_Werk. Prunk is also regular at DGTL, this year he played for their festival in Barcelona as well. It’s not just Prunk’s relaxed approach that gets him to play the gigs he does though. His warm and sexy, but always dancefloor orientated and uplifting sound that finds its influences in artists like Kerri Chandler, Djebali, Mark Farina and Mr Ks is definitely attracting attention from many promoters as well. These past two year he’s played at places like Miami, Dominican Republic, Moscow, Monaco, Barcelona, Austria, São Paulo, Switzerland and many Dutch festivals like Awakenings, Amsterdam Open Air, Verknipt Festival and Loveland Festival. With his Indonesian roots, playing at Bali’s finest club Jenja, where he’s been asked back twice, feels like a homecoming party to Prunk. While playing at Sao Paolo’s high-end club D.EDGE was nothing less of a dream either. Coming year sees more respected gigs for Prunk with another round of Amsterdam Open Air, Nassau Festival, All We Want Festival, Welcome to the Future Festival and the highly anticipated PIV stage hosting at The Ark; a party cruise which sets sail in Barcelona and then travels to Ibiza. From the start of the PIV label Prunk has been hosting labelnights at clubs like Chicago Social Club, De Marktkantine, Annabel and also in Malta. PIV has found its newest residency in Amsterdam’s freshest club Claire, where the first edition in April has Paolo Rocco and Mr Ks are on the line-up next to Chris Stussy and himself. It is with Stussy that Prunk has found his sparring partner. Prunk scouted the young artist a couple of years ago, as he also did with Bas Roos. Prunk and Stussy have played multiple gigs together, but they also spent time in the studio. Which resulted in the release of the ‘Material’ EP on EWax in the winter of 2016. Another production by the duo, the ‘Life EP’, was released on Moulton Music. Both EP’s caught the attention of vocalist Alex Mills, who you can hear on Miguel Campbell’s hit Something Special. Prunk and Mills hooked up in the studio with No Cure as a result. Together with Roos he produced the track What I Do, which found its way unto the Defected in the house Ibiza 2016 compilation. By the look of things Prunk has found his place in the fast moving world of dj-ing and producing and it doesn’t seem he’s going anywhere soon.

Although being dubbed a DJs DJ by many, Roog’s biggest talent is to mesmerize every crowd he is playing winning him every popularity award in Holland since 2000.

She is a resident of Amsterdam’s Radio Radio FM where she hosts her radio show ‘sweet like chocolate’ focused on dance music soundscapes primarily from the UK.

Secret Cinema

The artist known best for his Secret Cinema work started the nineties off with an array of projects that each played important roles. Verheij’s story started at one defining moment in 1990 at his parents’ house near Rotterdam, the Netherlands: The moment he decided to stop playing video games and start making music on his Amiga 500 computer. His first release ‘Sonar System’ as Meng Syndicate (Hithouse Records 1991) became an instant rave classic. Hungry for more the young producer invested his royalties in equipment. His friend Gert-Jan Bijl (a.k.a. 4lux frontman Gerd) recommended the Kurzweil K2000. This piece of equipment sparked an extremely productive period: “I made most of my nineties hits in 1994 sitting on the side of my bed because the room was too small to fit a chair in”. It was there that he made Point Blank - Meng's Theme; a track that according to the Swedish Drumcode label boss himself, inspired Adam Beyer to start making techno. The first Secret Cinema release “Timeless Altitude” followed soon and was a massive worldwide club hit played by Väth, Cox and was a Love Parade favourite. Grooveyard - Watch Me Now and Mary Go W!ld were huge crossover hits that made their way from the club into the national charts in several countries. At the time, Secret Cinema was part of a now extinct species of musician who made a living selling music without performing. He had one strong principle; he only wanted to perform his own music live on stage, no DJing. It was only sporadically he would bring out his huge rack of equipment to play a live set, inserting floppy disks with samples for each track. Again, it was a piece of equipment that brought around change… In 1998 Verheij discovered the Yamaha SU700 sampler sequencer: “It felt like the missing link for my live sets. I could mix from one song to the next like a DJ, but with control over every sound and effect”. This compact setup made Secret Cinema a pioneer of live acts as we have come to know them today. It also gave birth to an international career with travel now within reach; trips to Japan, China and across Europe. It was the setup with which he headlined many festivals in the early 00’s such as Wire, Mystery Land, Dance Valley and closing the main stage of Awakenings Festival 2005. After 15 years of strictly live sets Verheij broke his promise to himself. He decided it was time to get more freedom to play a different sound than his own. The start of Secret Cinema’s DJ career. It was then that he discovered Egbert who had a huge collection of unreleased tracks which only needed polishing. Gem Records with its booking agency and label nights was formed to accommodate the new talent Verheij discovered in his search for new music which no one else had yet. “The collective that started to form around me served as inspiration to find a new sound as a producer”. This resulted in chart successes such as ‘Kurzweil’, ‘Jazz Me’ and ‘Shake Ur Tek-Ass’. It also gave birth to a new act: Secret Cinema & Egbert. The duo is in high demand for their back to back performances and their releases. Secret Cinema’s Gem Sessions club nights have grown increasingly popular, now selling out venues such as the legendary Melkweg in Amsterdam where the infamous all night Gem Sessions take place with all artists on stage all night. Amsterdam Dance Event 2016 saw a collaboration with 909 for a sold out 3000 visitor showcase at Warehouse 22. Looking back on his career with releases on Gem, EC, Drumcode and Cocoon that defined the sound of eras for many clubbers of several generations and headlining stages across the globe Secret Cinema still feels he must accomplish more. “It’s funny, but after 25 years I feel I still haven’t reached my goal. Slowly but surely, I am still growing towards it. I always feel I need to prove myself. But maybe that is the driving force I need to keep going. It’s always been that way really. Balance is of the essence”.

Sidney Charles

His take on house music is known amongst fans as The Sidney Sound: it’s one built on heavy low ends, the immediate impact of chunky drums, cavernous low frequencies and hard hitting rhythms that connect directly with your body. Both as a DJ and a producer, Sidney favours rough, dirty sounds that defined the old school pioneers, but all with a modern, full and punchy approach. His signature tunes like ‘House Lessons’ and ‘Warehouse Romance’ established this early on, and since then the artist has homed in on ever more irresistible rhythms on key labels like Truesoul, Hot Creations and Saved. HIs upfront, dark, hard hitting take on house is about physicality and making your body move. He wants to get you jacked up on the dance floor and keep you there. He does so with a mixing technique drawn from his long standing love of hip hop and battle DJs: beat matching, subtle scratching and tight, quick, energetic mixes that move things along at a pace. His love of direct rhythms stems back to a A Tribe Called Quest’s seminal Low End Theory album, which was the first in hip hop to really focus on the power of the drums and placement of them in the mix. After initially being a hip hop DJ who peaked with a warm up set for the legendary Xzibit, house music really turned Sidney’s ear: he’d grown up with it all round him as his mother was a music journalist with Strictly Rhythm promos arriving on a regular basis, but only later did he grow to appreciate its more immediate sense of energy and drive, coupled with the funk he loved from hip hop. Over the years, he has played DC10 Circo Loco numerous times, Mute Beach in Argentina to 10,000 people with Hot Since 82, held a Do Not Sleep residency at Vista Club in 2015 and was resident of Tribal Sessions Sankeys at its peak in Manchester and Ibiza. His music, too, has achieved some real highs such as ‘Ruff Line’ making number 2 in Beatport’s chart, ‘All Night Long’ on Hot Creations being number 1 on Beatport, being RA’s most charted artist in 2013 and being nominated twice for Best Producer and Newcomer in the Ibiza DJs Awards These days based in the laidback and sunny climate of Portugal, where he has time to surf, relax and more room to think about his work than in the hustle and bustle of Berlin, he is continuing to mature as an artist. His current release ‘Rush’ ft. Liz Cass on DFTD is doing great on digital & streaming stores, as well as the start of his own label, Heavy House Society, whose name says it all: it will be a label that deals in heavy, forward looking, rhythm orientated house music. With a background as an A&R at Avotre a few years ago, Sidney will bring those skills to the new label as his love of unearthing hot new talents continues. Charles is at home in a small and sweaty club like Circo Loco at DC10 in Ibiza, but also Italy’s largest open air warehouse, Social Music City, in Milan, as well as plenty in between. This year he heads back to South America, where they love his booty-shaking bottom ends, as well as to big gigs like Creamfields. For those who really like to feel house music in their chest, then, there is no one better than Sidney Charles
