15 Years Gretchen: DJ Krush

Cutting-Edge-Beatmaking, abstrakte Jazz- und Soul-Samples, trippige Hip-Hop-Soundscapes, introspektive Klänge und subtile Scratching-Techniken – das sind nur einige der Kernmerkmale des DJ Krush-Universums und mehr als genug Gründe, ihn einzuladen. Ein weiterer guter Grund: Unser Gretchen wird 15 Jahre alt und uns verbindet lange gemeinsame Geschichte. Damit war sofort klar: Das gehört zusammen. Und es gibt auch noch ein neues Album: Inspiriert vom Puls der Stadt ist TOKYØHUM“ eine düstere, immersive Erzählung, die sich der unsichtbaren Energie, Spannung und Atmosphäre des urbanen Lebens widmet.

Inspiriert, fasziniert und motiviert vom legendären „Wild Style”-Film aus dem Jahre 1983, gewann der Japaner Hideaki Ishii, aka DJ Krush, einige DJ-Contests in den Clubs von Tokio, ehe er 1987 die vielleicht beste japanische Hip-Hop-Crew „Krush Posse“ gründete und dort als Backup-DJ fungierte. Seit 1992 kümmert er sich um Soloprojekte und veröffentlichte 1994 sein Debütalbum „Krush“. Sein zweites Soloalbum „Strictly Turntablized“ erschien auf dem Londoner Mo Wax-Label und landete in den Indie-Charts des renommierten NME. Das Label aus London war damals das Ding der Stunde und stand wie kein anderes für düstere, verrauchte Hip-Hop-Beats und jazzige Samples. Neben Labelkollege DJ Shadow wurde er 1995 als Godfather des Trip Hop gehypt und gilt als einer der Vorreiter des Turntablism. Seine Musik beschreibt er als Samuraischwert, in dessen Klingen sich die verschiedenen Aspekte des Lebens widerspiegeln.

Nach drei weiteren Alben auf Mo Wax wechselte er zum Majorlabel Sony. Die optisch-visuellen Elemente und die Instrumentierung seines Sounds, der von Album zu Album immer minimalistischer und atmosphärischer zu werden scheint, stimulieren die Phantasie seiner Zuhörer und können weitaus verführerischer und einvernehmender sein als Worte.

Der Stil von DJ Krush lässt sich in keine Schublade schieben, da er auf jedem Album seinem Sound eine andere Note gibt. Allein seine Herkunft vergisst er dabei offenbar niemals: Die klassischen japanischen Melodien sind in seinen Tracks immer mindestens so präsent wie Einflüsse aus Jazz und Soul. Nachdem er sich bis zu dem Album „Butterfly Effect“ (2015) elf Jahre Zeit ließ, drehte er im Jahr 2017 mit „Kiseki“ wieder voll auf – am Rad und an den Plattenspielern. Auf dem ziemlich cineastischen Album „Cosmic Yard“ (2018) verzichtete Krush gänzlich auf Vocals oder Rap und setzte auf naturalistische Sounds, viel Dub, aber auch auf Jazz- und Orchestersamples. Mit „Trickster“ (2020) kam dann ein ambitioniertes instrumentales Album, das sich stärker am experimentellen, atmosphärischen Ende von Hip-Hop und Elektronik orientierte als an traditionellen Hip-Hop-Strukturen. Auf „Saisei“ (2024) setzt sich diese Entwicklung fort: Die Tracks sind dicht und minimalistisch arrangiert, mit komplexen Beats, tiefen Basslinien und cinematischen Klangflächen. Eine intensive und meditative Mischung aus abstraktem Trip Hop, Ambient und Electronica.

In seinen Sets nutzt der Turntable-Magier die beiden Plattenspieler und das Mischpult wie live gespielte Instrumente und schöpft deren klangliche Möglichkeiten bis zum Letzten aus. DJ Krush ist live immer ein ganz besonderes Erlebnis und wir freuen uns sehr auf ihn und sein neues Album.

As Gretchen celebrates its 15th anniversary, it felt only natural to welcome back an artist with whom we've shared a long history. And there's a new album, too: inspired by the pulse of the city, TOKYØHUM is a dark, immersive narrative dedicated to the invisible energy, tension and atmosphere of urban life.

Inspired by the legendary 1983 film Wild Style, the Japanese artist Hideaki Ishii, aka DJ Krush, won several DJ contests in Tokyo clubs before founding one of Japan's most influential hip-hop crews, Krush Posse, in 1987, where he was the crew's DJ. Since 1992, he has focused on solo projects, releasing his debut album Krush in 1994. His second solo album, Strictly Turntablized, appeared on the London-based Mo Wax label and reached the indie charts of the renowned NME. At the time, Mo Wax became synonymous with dark, smoky hip-hop beats and jazzy samples. Alongside his label mate DJ Shadow, Krush was hailed as one of the godfathers of trip hop in 1995 and remains one of the pioneers of turntablism. He once described his music as a samurai sword whose blades reflect the many facets of life.

After three further albums on Mo Wax, he moved to the major label Sony. The visual qualities and instrumentation of his increasingly minimalist and atmospheric sound leave ample room for the listener's imagination and often prove more evocative than words.

DJ Krush's style defies categorisation, taking his sound in a different direction with every album while never losing sight of its roots: classic Japanese melodies remain just as integral to his music as influences from jazz and soul. After an eleven-year gap before releasing Butterfly Effect (2015), he returned with renewed energy on Kiseki (2017). On the cinematic album Cosmic Yard (2018), Krush dispensed entirely with vocals and rap, opting instead for field recordings, generous doses of dub, and jazz and orchestral samples. Trickster (2020) was an ambitious instrumental work that leaned further into the experimental and atmospheric side of hip-hop and electronic music than traditional hip-hop structures. This evolution continues on Saisei (2024), where the tracks are both dense and minimalist, combining intricate beats, deep basslines and cinematic soundscapes into an intense, meditative blend of abstract trip hop, ambient and electronica.

Behind the decks, DJ Krush treats turntables and mixer as expressive instruments in their own right, pushing their sonic possibilities to the limit. His performances remain as immersive and captivating as ever, and we're looking forward to experiencing his new material live.
